The BPH symptoms can develop quite rapidly - over a matter of weeks, or more slowly - nagging for several months. Although not everyone has symptoms, most men get a least some, especially:

Frequent need to urinate - increased frequency of trips to the bathroom at night (nocturia), that is eight or more times a day (one of the hallmark symptoms of a BPH).
Difficulty holding back urination (urgency) - need to urinate, the inability to delay urination.

It should be noted, however, that some mild cases of benign prostate hypertrophy may disappear spontaneously without any treatment.

All BPHs, though, should be thought of as the warning signs of something going on inside the prostate. They may seem unimportant at first, but they should never be ignored.
